The Indian stock markets reported a resounding recovery the day before, on March 6, 2026, by ending a 4-day losing streak, with the heavy Western buying of the PSU banks, metals, and some large-capacity stocks that boosted the benchmark indices.

The BSE Sensex was 812 points up (1.04%), closing at 78,892, and the NSE Nifty 50 also gained 238 points (0.97) to close at 24,920.

Top Gainers (Nifty 50)

State Bank of India (4.8 Percent) - Best performer; once more hopes that the government is going to inject capital and increase loans.

Leading the pack were Punjab National Bank (+4.2%), Bank of Baroda (+3.9%), and Canara Bank (+3.7%) in the PSU banking pack.

Tata Steel and JSW Steel and Hindalco (all up by more than 3.5 and 3.9 percent), and metal prices would run on strong global signals and rejuvenation hopes in China.

ONGC (+2.9%), Power grid (+2.4%) -Major energy and utility firms came in the uptrend.

Top Losers (Nifty 50)

Adani Ports (-3.1%) and Adani Enterprises (-2.7%)—Adani Group shares continued to be on the defensive following the geopolitical concerns and premium.

Tech Mahindra (-2.4%), Infosys (-1.8%), HCL Tech (-1.5%) - IT index simply dropped in the wake of US dollar strength and tepid technology outlook in the world.

Bharti Airtel (-1.9%)—The telecom giant fell behind on sector strength.

Sector Performance

The Nifty PSU Bank index was up 4.38 points (strongest in the sector)

Nifty Metal index jumped 3.1%

Nifty IT index dropped 1.6% (horizon's best loser)

Mid-cap and small-cap indices performed better than benchmarks, increasing 1.4-1.8%.

Analysts put the sharp reversal at:

Four days of heavy selling and then bargain hunting.

Favorable world signs (US markets up on softening inflationary indicators)

Shortage of PSU banks and metals before expiry of monthly F&O.

Reduction in crude oil prices that have been high.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were still net sellers, albeit with a decreasing pace, whereas the domestic institutions were still buying aggressively. The market breadth became highly positive with approximately 2200 advancing stocks as against approximately 800 decliners on the BSE.

The need to trade has boosted the spirit, but the traders are still worried about the tension in the Middle East and the future of the US economic figures.
