Hardayal Singh joined the Sikh Regiment in 1949 and was assigned to 1 St Battalion and he spent almost his entire service with the Regiment hockey team, first as a player and later as coach cum manager.
Hardayal Singh played for India at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics as an inside forward . The won a gold medal. Thereafter, he was promoted as JCO and served the Sikh Regimental hockey team till he took premature retirement to tend to his wife.
A contemporary of Harbinder Singh (Railways), and Col Haripal Kaushik, Hardayal settled in Dehradun, coached the Indian team and was decorated with "Dhyan Chand Award' for his lifetime contribution to the game.
