World Anti-Tobacco Day- 31st May 2021- How Covid-19 affecting Tobacco Users?

During Covid-19 and on World Tobacco Day, those who are addicted to tobacco in any form, should adapt to giving up this habit of smoking to save their life as well as to their closed ones also.

The world No Tobacco Day is celebrated on 31st May of every year with the aim to convey message in public that how dangerous tobacco is for their health. 

Tobacco kills almost 8 million people across world every year. The most interesting part is, people still using tobacco in some or other form.

The day was created in 1987 by the Member States of the WHO to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.

WHO launched a global campaign under the slogan “Commit to Quit” to celebrate the World No Tobacco Day 2021 and help create healthier conditions that promote tobacco cessation.

Is there any link between tobacco and Covid-19 ?

Smoking or chewing tobacco is the most common practice people are doing, which not only harm the respiratory system but weakened it and leads to many severe diseases like asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung damage, tuberculosis, hypertension and pulmonary disease. These are the comorbid conditions of Covid-19, which make it more severe and thus recovery also become difficult.

According to WHO, those who are consuming tobacco has a greater chance of contracting coronavirus than those who do not consume tobacco. The symptoms that occurs due to Covid-19 are worse reaching sometimes to fatal. 

The WHO has also reported many health complications which develop into severity for those people who consumes tobacco for long duration and leads to hospitalisation, intensive care and ventilation. Some of the health complication includes:

  • Liver injury,
  • Acute respiratory failure
  • Heart problem.

During Covid-19, all are taking many precautions to stay healthy and safe. 

But if you are a smoker…. Are you taking enough precautionary measure?

This is not just for you but also for your closed and dear ones. Exposure to tobacco fumes can cause many organ damages like lungs, arteries and heart to you and your closed ones. 

It’s the time to adopt this precautionary measure also, along with other like washing hand and sanitization during Covid-19. Tobacco weakens immune system and today we all need to make it strong and fight against this pandemic. It not only saves you but yours family members too. 

Ways to Quit Smoking

There are certain ways, which on practising, help to quit smoking. Quitting smoke in one day is not easy, but if you have decided, you will achieve this. Following are the few ways that can be tried to quit smoking: 

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy
  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Practise mindfulness
  • Distract yourself
  • Avoid buying
  • Chew gum
  • Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.
  • Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit

World Tobacco Day or Anti-tobacco day is celebrated to create awareness about the bad effects of smoking. The aim of this day is to aware people about the diseases caused due to smoking.

Smoking is not only harmful to the smokers but to those also who are staying near to them. It has severe effects on lungs, respiratory and many other organs, which weakens the immune system. During Covid pandemic, it is important to look and make immune system strong to fight against it, as infection from Covid-19 is easier in those having weak immune system.
