The Tamil Nadu government has chosen to praise each year the birth anniversary of reformist pioneer E V Ramasamy Periyar on September 17 as "Social Justice Day," Chief Minister M K Stalin declared in the Assembly on Monday. Periyar's philosophy was about social justice, self-respect, rationalism, and equality, which established the framework stone for the Tamil society's growth during the last century and it would also prepare for the future, Stalin said. 

Consequently, the government has chosen to praise the leader's introduction to the world anniversary consistently to serve as symbolic support of his libertarian principles, the Chief Minister said in the midst of pounding of benches. 

On that day every year, employees in all government offices including the State Secretariat would make pledges to follow values based on such elevated ideals which include, fraternity, equality, self-respect, and rationalism, he said. 

The Chief Minister reviewed the services of Periyar (September 17, 1879- - December 24, 1973) to the Tamil society and said he was instrumental in the sanctioning of the first Constitutional Amendment Act (that safeguarded reservation for in reverse classes).
