For years, fans linked Aamir Khan’s beloved character Phunsukh Wangdu (Rancho) from the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots to Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk. However, Aamir Khan recently clarified this as a misconception, stating that neither he nor director Rajkumar Hirani knew of Wangchuk during the film’s making.
According to Hirani, Rancho was partly inspired by a real FTII student who secretly attended classes using a friend’s identity just to learn filmmaking. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra also shared that elements drew from his own life, with the full name “Phunsukh Wangdu” influenced by his FTII classmate Phuntsok.
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, the film’s core message of pursuing excellence over rote learning remains timeless. While similarities in innovative spirit exist, the filmmakers emphasize Rancho as a composite character celebrating creative education and rebellion against the system. Aamir expressed respect for Wangchuk’s work regardless.
