The Government of India has given a strict order that a minor cannot bear an Indian and a foreign passport at the same time. It is applicable to children who might have acquired the foreign citizenship or OCI status due to their parents.
Going by the new regulations, parents are required to select one nationality/passport between their underage children. The rule is aimed at preventing the issues of dual documentation, traveling, and legal identity. Families will have to give one of the passports away when the child reaches the age when they make their own choices (usually, it is 18).
This explains specifically to NRIs, PIOs, and OCI cardholders. Authorities have requested parents to submit and put in records at passport offices or embassies. Failure to comply can be the cause of legal problems when traveling or acquiring a visa.
The relocation is a part of the larger initiatives to reinforce the routine of the pass port and citizenship control. Personalized guidance and easy transition are encouraged, and parents are advised to consult the Ministry of External Affairs or nearest passport office.
