Google has clarified before the Delhi High Court why a YouTube video by popular content creator Dhruv Rathee was blocked in India.
The company informed the court that the video, titled “Can Hindus eat BEEF? Kerala Story 2 Exposed” and uploaded on March 21, was withheld following a directive from the Centre’s Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC). Lawyer Amita Sachdeva had complained that the video contained false and provocative statements allegedly insulting Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Goddess Sita by claiming they consumed meat and alcohol.
YouTube initially refused to remove it, saying it did not violate community guidelines. After the High Court directed the GAC to decide the matter, the committee ordered action within 24 hours on July 15. Google complied by geo-blocking the video in India only. A plea for global removal remains pending before a division bench. The court adjourned the case to September 3.
