The 2026 Met Gala, on May 4 with the theme of "Fashion is Art" to the exhibition "Costume Art," saw several celebrities making direct homage to real artworks on the red carpet.
Emma Chamberlain took the stage in her custom-made, hand-painted Mugler gown, which reminds me of The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, with thick impasto textures. One of the most famous works of Gustav Klimt was used by Hunter Schafer: it was the Mada Primavesi portrait of Klimt, reworked in shimmering gold Chanel. Gracie Abrams used the portrait of the same artist, the famous Klimt portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
Kendall Jenner has used the Winged Victory of Samothrace, Kylie Jenner has been inspired by Venus de Milo, and the suit worn by Ben Platt featured scenes inspired by Georges Seurat and his A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Others nodding were Madame X by John Singer Sargent as well as other classical sculptures.
These artistic interpretations were an ideal reflection of the evening of celebrating fashion as living art, making the steps of the Met a walking museum.
