Rakul Preet Singh has opened up about why she agreed to play Shurpanakha in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic Ramayana: Part 1. Responding to a fan’s open letter on X that called the character misunderstood, the actress shared that the role’s layered complexity drew her in.
“What made me say yes to Surpanakha was exactly what you mentioned – her complexity. History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story,” Rakul wrote. She added that roles challenging audience perceptions are the most exciting for an actor and expressed hope that viewers will discover the character with an open mind when the film releases.
Shurpanakha, Ravana’s sister, is traditionally remembered for her encounter with Rama and Lakshmana. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita, is set for a Diwali 2026 release. Fans have praised Rakul’s thoughtful take on the iconic role.
