In a pathetic yet tragic turn of fate, the legendary Mangeshkar sisters, Lata Mangeshkar and her younger sibling Asha Bhosle, both died at the age of just 92 on a Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital, a prestigious hospital in Mumbai.
Lata Mangeshkar, who became known as the Nightingale of India, passed away after multiple organ failures because of post-COVID hospitalization on February 6, 2022. Asha Bhosle, the multi-skilled queen of playback singing, passed away on April 12, 2026, after an extended multi-organ failure due to a short period of illness comprising a chest infection and exhaustion. She was taken to the same hospital less than a day ago.
This is the last coincidence of the sisters who, in a duo, had registered the immortal songs and defined Bollywood music for decades. Her death was confirmed by her son Anand Bhosle, and her last rites are planned on Monday at Shivaji Park. The country has become inundated with better-than-best wishes dedicated to the duo whose music was the soundtrack of millions of lives. It is the start of a golden age in Indian cinema and music and, as such, a loss.
