Black chickpeas (kala/desi chana) and white chickpeas (kabuli chana) are both nutritious legumes, but they differ in key areas.
Both offer around 19–22g protein per 100g dry weight, making them excellent plant-based protein sources. Black chickpeas often have a slight edge in protein and significantly higher fiber due to their thicker dark hull. This extra fiber promotes greater satiety, supports digestion and helps with weight management by keeping you fuller longer.
For blood sugar control, black chickpeas generally have a lower glycemic index thanks to higher fiber and polyphenols, leading to a slower glucose release. White chickpeas remain low-GI and versatile for hummus, salads and creamy dishes, while black ones hold their shape better in curries and sprouts.
Overall, black chickpeas hold a modest advantage for weight loss, protein density and blood sugar stability. Include either (or both) in balanced meals for best results.
