This has created widespread misunderstandings among doctors, such as the prevailing myth that hypertension can be “cured” after controlling the blood pressure with medicines, which is alarming in India. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a lifelong chronic condition, according to experts. Aim to keep the levels of BP under control and minimize the risk of complications such as heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage, but cannot cure the disease.
Unfortunately, many patients die once their readings return to a normal range, and sudden escalations of readings can cause health problems to arise. Top heart physicians note that hypertension is a lifelong condition that must be managed with regular checkups, diet, exercise, and stress reduction accompanied by medication.
Myths include “BP medicines are bad for long-term use,” “youth do not develop BP” and “there are herbal medicines that cure BP completely.” Even when BP is controlled, doctors are stressing the need for regular check-ups and lifestyle changes. This awareness initiative is to avoid any complications caused by this silent killer impacting millions of Indians.
