On Wednesday, India has registered 1.61 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases and 1,733 deaths in the past 24 hours, said the Union Ministry. As many as 17,42,793 Covid tests were administered on February 1, a total of 73,24,39,986 tests have been done so far, said the Ministry of Health. 

As per the ministry, the active case count has dropped to 3.90 per cent, while the daily positivity rate stood at 9.26 per cent. 

Highly infectious subvariant of Omicron 

On Tuesday, the WHO said that a highly infectious subvariant of Omicron coronavirus strain, which some studies indicate could be even more infectious than the original version, has been detected in 57 countries. The fast-spreading and heavily mutated Omicron variant has rapidly become the dominant variant worldwide since it was first detected in southern Africa 10 weeks ago, said the WHO.
