Covid Updates: With 1,033 Fresh cases, XE Variant found in Mumbai

India has registered 1,033 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. First case of Covid's XE variant found in Mumbai.

On Thursday, India has logged 1,033 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 4,30,31,958, as per the Union Ministry of Health. At present, the nation's active caseload stands at 11,000, showed the data. 

With 43 fresh fatalities due to the viral infection, the virus-related death toll has climbed to 5,21,530, said the ministry. The nation's caseload of recoveries from Covid-19 has reached 4,24,98,789, including 1,222 recoveries being logged in the last 24 hours, the data showed. 

As per the health ministry, the daily positivity rate stands at 0.23 percent with the weekly positivity rate standing at 0.22 percent. The active cases in the country comprise 0.03 percent of the total infections. The recovery rate from Covid-19 in the country stands at 98.76 percent. 

Delhi 

On Wednesday, Delhi has registered 126 fresh Covid-19 cases along with 1 death, the positivity rate in the city stands at 1.12 percent, said the data shared by the state health department. 

Coronavirus's new variant XE in Mumbai 

A new variant of coronavirus, XE has been reported from Mumbai in India. 230 samples were sent for Genome sequencing, out of which 228 are tested positive for 

Omicron, One for Kappa and One for XE. 

As per the report by the Maharashtra government, the XE variant has been detected in a female who is 50 years old South-African, she came to India from South Africa on February 10. State Surveillance officer Dr. Pradip Awate, "She was tested on February 27 for Covid-19 and found positive. Her lab sample had been referred to Kasturba Hospital central laboratory for WGS (whole genome sequencing). It has been found to be a new XE variant in initial sequencing", quoted as saying by the Times of India.
