With intense heatwaves hitting various regions of India in April 2026, doctors have stressed the need to take some basic precautions to prevent heat-related problems such as exhaustion and stroke.

A doctor has emphasized the three rules of safety:

  1. Keep Hydrated Even If You're Not Thirsty—Sip Water Frequently. Add oral rehydration solution (ORS), coconut water, or fresh juices to keep electrolyte levels up.
  2. Minimize Outdoors Between 11 AM and 4 PM—Enjoy the outdoors on alternative days and times outside of the hottest period. If you need to, carry an umbrella and hat and wear airy, light-colored cotton clothing.
  3. Keep Indoors Cool—Another way to avoid heat exposure is staying inside. Keep your home cool with curtains, fans, coolers, or air conditioners, and stay in shaded or cool places.

Health experts caution the vulnerable, like children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, should take additional precautions. Adhering to such guidelines can minimize health risks associated with heat exposure.
