Many people who got a covid-19 infection, have an understanding that they develop natural immunity which can fight against Covid-19. So, further there is no need to worry about the reinfection and thus, there is no requirement of vaccination. With this mindset, they become least bothered for the vaccination. This not only harm them but also others who are close to them.

According to many experts, a person who were diagnosed with Covid-19, may not build up enough antibody that can fight the infection. For enough antibody, it is important one should get vaccinated to have full protection against the disease. They also noted that the immune response develop after infection is not as strong as occurs after the vaccination. Recovered people from Covid-19, can be infected again and transmit the virus as well, if they have not been vaccinated.

Many experts also says that after Covid-19 disease, for how long an individual is protected, is yet not clear and there is a chance that a virus can cause infection again.

What Experts Think About Vaccination

According to Dr. Julie Parsonnet, expert in adult infectious diseases, Stanford University in California, the immune system in people who are exposed to the virus for the first time, does not build up very strong response against the virus. When these people reinfected they got sick. This is also true, that after infection, some immunity do develop but according to the data available, vaccination can develop better immunity to fight against reinfection of virus.

Dr. William Schaffner, an expert in infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, also recommended for the vaccination, based on two important factors:

  • The first is after Covid-19 infection, antibodies produced are in very less amount while as antibody levels produced after vaccination are much higher,  which provide longer duration of protection
  • The second is, higher antibody levels provide a greater protection even against some of the scary variants.

These two reasons are sufficient to understand how vaccination is important.

When Should a Recovered person from Covid-19 get Vaccinated?

People who might have just tested positive or have tested negative after recovery may have the option to delay their shot by upto few weeks as the infection with coronavirus produces natural immunity in an infected or just recovered person. Depending upon the level of antibodies present in the body, can help to determine the best time to get vaccinated. According to health authorities, natural immunity last from 90-180 days , but differ depending upon the severity, history of infection and chronic ailments.

  • The US’ Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that a person get vaccinated immediately after recovery.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a person should wait six months as natural antibodies seem to stay in the human body until then.
  • In India, most doctors recommend a gaps between recovery and vaccination from one and three months.
  • According to Dr Gagandeep Kang, immunologist at Christian Medical College, Vellore, waiting for at least four to eight weeks after recovery provides reasonable protection against infection, which allow the body to build up the natural immunity to the maximum. Getting a vaccination after this, will not only boost the immune response, but also reduce the risks which could complicate the case, and protect you from dangerous mutants as well.

Therefore, Health experts are advising people to get vaccinated even if already had COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), also advise people to get vaccinated regardless of whether they have already had COVID-19.
