In a significant advancement for cancer care in India, Roche Pharma has introduced Tecentriq SC (subcutaneous atezolizumab), the country’s first 7-minute injectable immunotherapy for lung cancer. Launched in mid-May 2026, the under-the-skin injection drastically reduces administration time from several hours of intravenous (IV) infusion to just about seven minutes.
The drug is approved by CDSCO for adjuvant and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in eligible adults, including as a chemotherapy-free monotherapy in certain cases. It is administered in the thigh by trained nursing staff in outpatient settings, offering greater convenience, reduced hospital burden, and lower indirect costs for patients and caregivers.
Priced at approximately Rs 3.7 lakh per vial, patients typically require 3 to 6 doses depending on the treatment regimen. To improve access, Roche has introduced the Blue Tree patient assistance program. The therapy is already available in over 85 countries and has benefited thousands globally.
Oncologists hail the launch as a breakthrough that can ease pressure on overburdened cancer centers across India. While the high cost remains a challenge, experts believe faster administration and potential expansion to daycare settings will make advanced immunotherapy more accessible. This development marks an important step in transforming the lung cancer treatment experience in the country.
