Dr. Priya Sharma, a senior gastroenterologist at a top hospital in Delhi, says that most people, in terms of issues of the health of the gut, especially in the majority of cases, would have better results with green tea than black coffee, unless the latter suits a person more than the former.
Green tea contains strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties due to catechins and L-theanine and helps to support the intestinal microbiome, decrease inflammation of the intestine, and potentially prevent IBS, leaky gut, and even colorectal disorders. Its lower caffeine content (2045 mg per cup) and close-to-neutral pH help it to be less irritating to the stomach mucosa and help in the digestion of fats and the prevention of the flare-up of acid reflux, heartburn, or gastritis. As Dr. Sharma notes, it also stimulates the flow of bile and promotes fat digestion without excessive stimulation of the gastric secretion of acid.
Black coffee, though rich in chlorogenic acids and antioxidants that enhance liver function and metabolic well-being, is a lot more acidic (pH of about 5) and has a higher concentration of caffeine (95-100 mg in a cup). This will be able to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, raise the production of stomach acid, and irritate the members of the gut lining, particularly individuals who have a risk of GERD, ulcers, or tender stomachs. Most of the patients that she treats complain of aggravated bloating, cramps, or loose stool when taking regular black coffee.
Nonetheless, black coffee is not necessarily something bad, as it can cause a better level of alertness, improve performance in exercises, and even provide some protection against specific liver diseases. The most significant distinction is the tolerance: individuals who are not affected by acids may drink moderate amounts of black coffee (1-2 cups a day), whereas green tea can be consumed by a broader audience, especially individuals with gastrointestinal discomforts.
Verdict of Dr. Sharma: Gut longevity and a day-to-day sipping beverage: green tea. Black coffee should be kept as a reserve and taken when you require a boost of energy—it must be eaten with food to counter the acidity.
These two drinks are moderate, but overconsumption of any of them will cause issues. Take care of your body, and, in case of constant pain, see a physician.
