How to Help People With Hallucination? Cause of Schizophrenia and its Treatment

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that may involve disconnect from reality. Along with various symptoms, people also experience psychosis, which includes hallucinations, delusions, and leads to impairment in the behavior and daily functioning.

Overview and Cause

People with this disorder interpret reality in an abnormal way and might lose their usual activities, and withdraw from loved ones. Suicidal thoughts and behavior are common among people with schizophrenia. Early treatment may help to keep the symptoms under control before any serious complications develop and may also help to improve the long-term outlook.

The main cause of this is still not clear but according to the research, it occurs due to multiple genetic and environmental factors. Children with schizophrenia are ten times more to develop schizophrenia.

Different types of Symptoms

It involves a range of symptoms like problems with thinking (cognition), behavior, expressions, and emotions. Other symptoms may include:

  • Delusions- These are false beliefs that are not based in reality and occur mostly in this disorder.
  • Hallucinations- These usually involve seeing or hearing things that don't exist  
  • Disorganized thinking - Evidenced by derailed or incoherent speech
  • Flat affect - diminished facial expressions, and appears non-interested. 
  • The paucity of speech or thought - Only speaking when prompted and replying with short answers
  • Bizarre behavior - Inappropriate, disorganized, or odd behavior inappropriate for a child’s age

Symptoms can vary and become severe with time. Some symptoms may always be present.

  • Men- symptoms typically start in the early to mid-20s.
  • Women- symptoms typically begin in the late 20s.
  • Children- It's uncommon for children to be diagnosed with schizophrenia 

Treatment

Certain Medication for schizophrenia and therapy options are available, which can improve symptoms and sometimes help keep them from coming back. But it is also important to understand that symptoms may never go away completely.

  • Antipsychotic medication is the primary treatment for schizophrenia in children as well as adults
  • Talk therapy like psychoeducation and the problem-solving session may also be helpful to children with schizophrenia. 
  • Social skills training, relapse prevention, vocational training program, and basic life skills training may be helpful. 
  • In some cases, emergency hospitalization may be needed

How to help people suffering from schizophrenia

Schizophrenia not only affects motivation and daily activities but also makes it difficult to focus at work or school. Offering respect and care is the best way to support them and maintain your connection. Here are some of the ways that can help them return to work.

  • Help them to stay physically active
  • Help them to eat regular meals.
  • Helping your loved one to feel good about them or themselves is important.
  • Help them to try Yoga, exercise, painting, or gardening
  • Help them to sleep better with certain brainstorming nighttime routines.
  • Encourage them to get engaged in healthy skills like listening to the music or practicing mindfulness meditation
