Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a rare but potentially serious, fatal disease that is transmitted primarily via exposure to infected wild rodents, particularly deer mice. There is no vaccine available; prevention is the best protection.
Key Prevention Steps:
Key Prevention Steps:
- Use steel wool, metal, or cement to seal up all holes/gaps (even ¼") of homes, garages, and sheds.
- Reduce any rodent populations with traps containing snap traps.
Clean Up Safely: Never sweep or vacuum droppings. Ventilate for 30 minutes; use gloves; use an N95 mask; spray with disinfectant or a 10% bleach solution; allow to soak; then wipe with paper towels.
Keep food packed in sealed containers; clear away clutter and ensure woodpiles and waste materials are kept out of buildings. Air out cabins and sheds prior to cleaning. These measures recommended by the CDC greatly minimize the risk of exposure to this deadly virus. If exposed and symptoms of the flu are observed, followed by loss of breath, all visitors should seek medical attention ASAP.
