It has been informed by the Centre that by the end of this year more than 136 crore vaccines are expected to be available in the country. Serum Institute of India's programme (SII) Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin will be accelerating the vaccination drive in India for the next four months.

As per the reports of India Today, the note titled "Covid-19 Public Health Response Pro-active, Pre-emptive and Graded Response guided by Epidemiologicaland Scientific Rigour" also gave details about the vaccine production targets which are given to MPs from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Centre has placed an advance order for August to December 2021, 75% of Covishield vaccine doses will be procured for a total of 50 crore at Rs 215.25 per dose at a total cost of Rs 8071.87 crore.

The note says that the government will buy 28.5 crore Covaxin doses from Bharat Biotech at Rs 225.75 per dose at a cost of Rs 6,433.87 crore. A total of 88 crore vaccine doses will be produced and the Centre will buy 66 crore doses.  Bharat Biotech is expected to supply 28.51 crore doses of Covaxin in 2021 and the Serum institute of India will produce 173.4 crore doses. A total of 201.91 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin are projected to be produced in 2021, as per the note.

On Sputnik V, it stated, “Sputnik V is not yet produced till July and it is expected that 25 million doses will be manufactured in August, September and October. Thereafter, there is no clarity/visibility as it depends on the bulk to be provided by Russia for filling.”

The note further said, “Due to ongoing field activities in terms of increased testing, surveillance, clinical management and other activities for more than one year, the health system witnessed fatigue. Health system in peri-urban and rural areas was strained due to sudden surge in cases being managed with a limited capacity of beds, testing, drugs, oxygen, and logistics.”

“Lack of Covid appropriate behaviour and complacency set in the community during open economic activities, the virus spread rapidly across India,” it added.
