Is it required to get a heart scan before going to the gym? This is a question that every gym goer or one who is thinking to go definitely thinks about. There have been number of cases in recent times that have shown people getting cardiac arrest while training in the gym and that includes many celebrities and young athletes. They are often considered to be epitomes of fitness and good health but recent cases have shown that they are getting heart attack while exercising.

When this situation was discussed with medical professionals they opined that people who have never done any exercises or have performed only mild intensity workouts cardiac testing is not necessary, these forms of exercises include brisk walking, swimming and walking. A person gets a cardiac arrest during exercise when there is gradual buildup of calcified plaque in the arteries. This can make the coronary arteries narrower leading to risk of heart attack as physical activities can put a strain on the heart. Heart problems can also run in the family therefore it is advised to get a heart scan to be safe, a person by the age of 30-35 should have heart check-up if the problem runs in the family.

Some of the tests one can do is ECG, Echo and TMT (treadmill test) beside these tests one can also do blood sugar evaluation, lipid profile, cholesterol levels etc. Heart Calcium Score is recommended to check people with no prior symptoms. WHO has found that nearly 11% of the Indian population suffers from heart diseases therefore if someone is planning to join the gym precautions should be taken.
