Causes
The main cause of this condition is yet not clear but according to few researchers, it occurs due to delayed immune response to the coronavirus, that cause inflammation and damage to the organs. Many children with MIS-C showing positive antibody test results i.e. they've had a recent infection with the COVID-19 virus or may have a current infection with the virus.
The the National Institutes of Health and CDC are working with doctors and researchers across the country to learn more about risk factors for MIS-C, share data, and improve diagnosis and treatment of MIS-C.
Diagnosis, Findings and Treatment
Laboratory tests are recommended for those diagnosed with this syndrome, which includes:
- Blood and urine tests
- Chest x-ray
- Electrocardiogram, which measures electrical activity in the heart, and echocardiogram (heart ultrasound)
Common laboratory findings includes:
- Elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) or NT-proBNP (pro-BNP), hyponatremia, elevated D-dimers.
- An abnormal level of inflammatory markers in the blood, including elevated ESR/CRP and ferritin, LDH.
- Lymphopenia <1000, thrombocytopenia <150,000, neutrophilia.
On the basis of availability of reports, doctors recommended the treatment that includes:
- If patients appear hypotensive and septic- treatment include antibiotics, fluid resuscitation,
- IVIG therapy- Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG), a “biologic" medicine that contains immune-system antibodies
- Steroid therapy ( eg.methylprednisolone ) and biologics (eg, anakinra): if no improvement are seen in patients. This is done to treat swelling or inflammation
- Low-dose aspirin for thromboprophylaxis.
