PCOS, on behalf of the updated value to PMOS at a decade's end. Having been misclassified for over a decade, PCOS required official renaming as PMOS at the end of a decade.
A breakthrough was announced on May 12, 2026, for a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), or by its name, Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). The change, based on the input from more than 22,000 and years of international consensus, was published in The Lancet.
Many were fooled by the word "polycystic," becoming very concerned with the concept of ovarian cysts, which may or may not occur and may or may not be important. More representative of the underlying status of the condition, the PMOS captures the interdependent polyendocrine/metabolic aspect of the condition affecting hormones, weight, insulin, mental health, skin, and reproduction. In the world, 170 million women suffer from it. In the world, one lady in eight is suffering from it.
The name change is intended to help to de-stigmatize the condition, increase the speed of diagnoses, develop more effective treatment strategies, and raise funds for research. In medical systems, the most anticipated transition to PMOS is over the next few years. This is a newfound age of care and awareness for people impacted.
