A 2026 University of Bonn study published in Nature Communications found that eating primarily oatmeal for just two days can significantly improve cholesterol levels. Participants with metabolic syndrome consumed about 300 grams of oats daily (boiled in water, with limited fruit or vegetables) in a calorie-restricted plan.
Their LDL (“bad”) cholesterol dropped by roughly 10%, and total cholesterol fell by about 8%. Remarkably, these improvements were still detectable six weeks later, even after returning to normal diets. Researchers linked the benefits to changes in the gut microbiome, which produced helpful compounds like ferulic acid that influence cholesterol metabolism.
While promising, this was a short, intensive intervention—not everyday oatmeal with milk and sugar. Experts note the reduction is meaningful but less potent than medication. Always consult a doctor before making major diet changes, especially if you have high cholesterol or related health conditions.
