RLS, or Willis-Ekbom disease, is a sleep disorder involving the legs, which causes uncomfortable sensations or feelings in the legs, which leads to an irresistible urge to move them. This typically gets worse in the evening or when lying down and makes it particularly difficult to fall or remain asleep.
The symptoms can vary and may include crawling, tingling, itching, or aching sensations deep in the legs, which are often relieved or alleviated temporarily by walking or flexing the leg. It is affecting many millions of people worldwide, and women, pregnant people, and people with iron deficiency, diabetes, and kidney disease seem to have a higher chance of developing it.
The underlying causes are various: genetic factors, an imbalance in dopamine production in the brain as well as low iron levels, or some drugs. It makes it worse when not triggered by some lifestyle factors such as caffeinated items, alcohol, and non-activity.
The treatment involves iron medications, lifestyle modifications, exercise, and, in severe cases, medicines known as dopamine agonists. If you have sleepy legs frequently, check with a physician for the right diagnosis and treatment to get some restful nights of sleep.
