There are two kinds of sleepers- Morning lark and Night Owl.
Well! So many people love to rise early but at the same time many people keeps turning off the alarm to take a one moment more to sleep or get up with clumsy and tired body.
Most of the people fall somewhere in between these two categories i.e. some are morning person and some are night person.
Morning larks or an early birds are early risers who follows early to bed, early to rise.
Night owl who are active in the evening and so sleep late.
What studies says on this!
Sleep researchers used the term chronotype to refer individuals difference in the activity and alertness in the evening and in the morning.
According to study published in "Nature Communications" in February 2016, sleep pattern depends on many factors like age and gender and made a huge difference on it. It also showed that people of age above 60 years are morning lark whereas those under 30 were night owl.
In one of the research, MRI scan was done in several people who were either morning larks or night owls, to see how well their brain function at different times of day. The researchers found that morning people were least sleepy and had the fastest reaction in the morning while as night people had the fastest reaction and least sleepy during the evening but even in the evening, night owls didn’t have significantly faster reaction than the morning people.
Research has also shown that the mismanagement of professional life, makes the person night owl, which leads to poor mental health and increased risk of chronic conditions like cancer and heart attack.
Sleeping pattern have increased many risk of certain diseases and any studies have linked the sleep pattern with diseases like depression, diabetes and obesity.
According to the study conducted in Aachen University-Germany, a brain scan determined that night owls had less white matter, a type of fatty tissue in the brain, which increases the risk of depression and impairs cognitive function.
Most of the research favours to morning larks and conclude:
- Night owls experience a higher risk of depression than morning larks.
- They’re more likely to be habitual users of tobacco and alcohol.
- Night owls take poor and unhealthy diet than early risers.
- They have higher blood pressure, more weight and unfortunately die sooner than early risers.
But few data also suggests that night owls tend to be more productive and have more stamina during the day.

Although many reasons make people night owl like jobs, lifestyle etc. and it is hard to resynchronize the time schedule but following some tight schedule will make it possible and take sometimes. Here are some tips which can bring transition to a morning lark
- Turn Off you gadgets one hour before going bed: Using these stuffs during bedtime keeps your brain awake and thus does not give you peaceful sleep
- Rigid sleep schedule and avoid lights at wrong time
- No Alarm Snoozing: Bring change to an earlier wake-up time.
- Add early morning Light in the bedroom: It will help to wake you up
- Go for morning walk with your friends
It is advisable for the night owls that it they cannot change their schedule, they need to be extra careful about their health by maintaining healthy lifestyle, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.
