Ulna nerve starts from the spine, passing behind the elbow joint and going all the way down to your little and ring fingers. The ulnar nerve is responsible to send information to muscles in the wrist and hand and also send information to the brain about sensations a person is feeling in the 4th and 5th fingers and the part of the hand under those fingers.

It is a primary and the largest nerve which is not protected by any muscle or bone. So, it is easily injured by hitting it against something and leads to get pressed against the nearby humerus bone, which is the long bone that goes from your elbow to your shoulder.                                                             

A person experiences an uncomfortable feeling when you bump it. It creates pain all the way down from your elbow to your little finger. A person generally left holding his hurt elbow after a bump. 

Why does it hurt so much when you hit your funny bone?                                              

At some point the nerve is not protected by any muscle and when something hits or bumps your elbow at this point, the nerve being pinched and compressed and so hurt.  

When this nerve got hit, it temporarily stops the nerve’s connection to the brain and results in the feeling of pain and numbness.

Why it is called a Funny bone?

The reason behind its name is not much clear, but many experts explained the reasons why it is called so.

Though there is nothing to do with laugh with this bone but some people think that because of “funny or wired feeling”, it got its name. 

Others believe that this bone hits the humerus bone and it may be based on the sound resemblance between the name of the upper arm bone, the “humerus” and the word “humorous”, which used to describe something funny. 

Hitting Funny Bone Doesn’t Harm

If your funny bone hits, there is nothing harm to it. It will only give you a tingling or pain feeling, which will go shortly. Although hitting your funny bone is really not so funny.

The pain generally subsides in few minutes but a person can put on a splint before bed, or wrap a pillow or towel around their elbow to keep their arm more relaxed.
