Your Body at 46°C: What Happens When Core Temperature Hits Deadly Levels!

At 46°C, as is experienced with severe heatstroke and/or hyperthermia, multi-organ failure, protein degradation, and neurological collapse occur quickly, with very little chance of survival.

This makes a core temperature of 46°C very dangerous and sometimes fatal. The normal human body temperature is approximately 37°C; above 40 is a medical emergency, and above 42-44 the chances of death or permanent brain damage give rise to reason.

Proteins start to denature, or "cook," beginning to disrupt the cells at 46°C. The brain fluid builds up and causes seizures and coma, resulting in permanent neurological damage. The inflammation, clotting problems, and direct heat toxicity cause massive failure of the heart, kidney, liver, and muscles. Blood vessels leak, and the victim suffers internal bleeding and shock.

Only a few cases of survival have been reported at 46.5°C with ultra-rapid cooling and good nursing, but the majority of victims died. These signs are immediate and include confusion, hallucinations, coma, or the lack of sweat. Staying hydrated, staying in the shade, and avoiding extreme heat conditions is extremely important, as treatment opportunities will be very limited once the temperature reaches this level.

This is the absolute thermal limit of human beings.
