According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a norovirus outbreak on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship that has already infected 115 people. The 102 passengers and 13 crew members report symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea on the voyage that left Port Everglades on April 28 and will arrive at Port Canaveral on May 11.
Norovirus is a stomach virus that is spread very quickly through contaminated surfaces, water, and food—especially in the close quarters of a ship. The ship has adopted more stringent cleaning procedures and quarantined people who are infected, affecting more people.
It is the latest gastrointestinal illness incident on a cruise and is causing concern amongst travelers. Health officials recommend that everyone on the bus wash their hands often and stay out of places that can be contaminated.
Caribbean Princess was transporting more than 3,100 people. Although most of the cases seem mild, norovirus can lead to very severe dehydration in the vulnerable category. The CDC is still following up on the case as the ship sails toward Florida. People who travel should notify officials right away if they have symptoms.
