Three coaches of the empty Ujjaini Express (train no. 14317) derailed late on Thursday night while shunting in the railway yard of Khand Gaon near Yog Nagari Rishikesh station in Uttarakhand. The train was being moved for maintenance at about 9:30 PM.
Initial preliminary reports suggest possible brake failure has caused this accident. Luckily, there were no vehicles on the ‘rake' as there were no passengers, so no injuries or deaths were reported. The railway rescue teams have been operating through the night using cranes to unravel the derailed LHB coaches and repair the tracks.
A detailed investigation of the mishap has been ordered by the Northern Railway's Moradabad Division. The Ujjaini Express is a train from Ujjain to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. It was confirmed that trains will be restored to their regular schedules as soon as possible after clearance. The quick action ensured that the chaotic route of pilgrims was not to become much bigger.
