The blast late Wednesday night at the Panihati area in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal injured five members of the BJP. The explosion took place near St. Xavier's Institution on Dutta Road, which is near newly elected BJP MLA Ratna Debnath's house, whose mother is the woman raped and murdered at the Rajghat Ghat.
The police say the BJP workers were along with the locals when the unidentified persons threw the bombs at them. The wounded were rushed to RG Kar Medical College & Hospital for that.
The attack is coming on the heels of the Assembly elections and coinciding with increased tension within days of the killing of a close aide of a BJP leader. BJP has suspected that ruling party goons are involved and wants stringent measures to be taken. TMC has so far never claimed any responsibility for the violence.
Police have launched an investigation and tightened security in the sensitive area. The attack has brought to the fore again fears of a resurgence of political violence in West Bengal after the voting process.
