On April 7, 2026, the Centre issued a gazette notification, which declared Amaravati as the only permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh and an end to the long-standing capital row that had started following the 2014 bifurcation.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Act, 2026, had been assented to by President Droupadi Murmu on April 6. The amendment corrects the version of Section 5 of the 2014 Act, which already explicitly defines Amaravati as the new capital, as opposed to the old ambiguous version. It is retroactively effective since June 2, 2024.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu celebrated the development as a historic success of the people of Andhra Pradesh, especially the farmers of Amaravati, who gave up parts of their lands. He gave thanks to the president and the central government.
The relocation will expedite the work in Amaravati and will provide political and administrative stability to the state following decades of political and administrative turmoil about the three-capitals proposal. The long-pending resolution was embraced by leaders across the parties.
