Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India gives the Governor of a state the power to dissolve the state Legislative Assembly, which has been done by the Governor of West Bengal, RN Ravi. The move followed a grave and resounding defeat of Trinamool Congress by the BJP in the recently held Assembly elections. Composition chief Mamata Banerjee had abjectly refused to quit the party following her slander.
Mamata Banerjee had said she would not step aside and termed the election results as "looted," accusing them of irregularities on a large scale. She met with the newly elected MLAs of TMC at her Kalighat residence and termed the gesture a symbolic protest and stated her intention of going to the Supreme Court.
The entity was formally dissolved, bringing to an end the 17th Legislative Assembly of West Bengal, which was elected in 2021, and thus paving the way for the first BJP-led government in West Bengal. A swearing-in ceremony is expected soon.
This development has added to the political vendetta and furore in West Bengal, with both the opposition contingents railing against the governor's action, for it is a crackdown on the prime minister, and the BJP, its internal faction, joined them in calling it a move towards constitutional propriety.
