On March 6, 2026, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that Bengaluru would construct a second airport after submitting the state budget of 2026–27. The relocation will help alleviate traffic congestion at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), which is emerging as the third-busiest in India and is set to reach capacity constraints annually as passenger traffic soars.
Spreading the burden, Siddaramaiah announced in the assembly that Kempegowda International Airport will receive a second airport in Bengaluru on which a feasibility report will be drawn once technical advice is provided by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The announcement follows several other hints, such as the one given by Deputy CM DK Shivakumar of a possible location in South Bengaluru. The state has also invested in domestic airport upgrades with 7 facilities being released by this year, ₹1,593 crore in total, and ₹200 crore in 2017. This infrastructure drive is likely to boost connectivity, facilitate the status of Bengaluru as a tech and economic center, and attract more investments, but the details on location, schedule, and cost will have to be published in the feasibility study led by AAI.
