In a significant turn of events at the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi was ahead of other candidates in the early votes at the prestigious Jorhat seat as the vote counting began on May 4. The high-profile contest will be between Gogoi, who is making his first debut in the assembly, and also against BJP veteran and five-term MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami.
Son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and current Jorhat Lok Sabha MP, Gaurav has emerged as a key face for the Congress-led alliance. In 2024, he gained Congress a huge majority in the Jorhat parliamentary seat, which revitalized Congress in Upper Assam.
The Jorhat battle has attracted a lot of publicity, with many who see Gogoi as a potential chief ministerial candidate among the opposition. Preliminary results have brought hope to the workers in the Congress, but final outcomes are yet to be received amid a high level of security in counting centers.
The impact that this outcome might have on the overall Assam election story is that both parties are vying with each other to gain supremacy in the state.
