In an unusual incident, a couple has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a one-month-old boy, reportedly prompted by their daughter's wish for a brother to tie a rakhi on the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival. Sanjay Gupta, 41, and Anita Gupta, 36, residents of Raghubir Nagar in Tagore Garden, were driven by the tragic loss of their 17-year-old son last year.

Kidnapping Unfolds Amid Heartfelt Request

The sequence of events began to unravel on Thursday at 4:34 am when the police were alerted about the alleged kidnapping of an infant belonging to a handicapped woman. The couple who resides on a footpath at Chhatta Rail Chowk reported that they discovered their child missing upon waking around 3 am. They suspected foul play and believed their child had been kidnapped.

Investigation and Tracing the Culprits

A swift investigation ensued, with police examining approximately 400 CCTV cameras in the vicinity. This effort led them to spot two individuals on a motorbike, roaming the area during the time of the incident. The trail of evidence eventually led to LNJP Hospital. Delving into the details, it was revealed that the motorbike was registered in Sanjay's name.

The Culmination of Efforts

The police, equipped with about 15 personnel, including female officers, secured the area and initiated a search. Their efforts brought them to C-Block in Tagore Garden's Raghubir Nagar, where they located the accused couple along with the kidnapped child. Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi confirmed the successful resolution of the case.

Motivation and Criminal History

During the investigation, Sanjay and Anita Gupta disclosed that their teenage son had tragically passed away after a fall from a terrace on August 17 the previous year. In the midst of their daughter's heartfelt request for a brother to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, the couple decided to resort to an extreme measure. They admitted to abducting the sleeping infant to fulfill their daughter's wish, as well as to provide a companion in the absence of their son. Sanjay, a tattoo artist, had prior involvement in three criminal cases, while Anita is a mehandi artist. The infant's parents, who are homeless and handicapped, live on a footpath.
