On 23 February 2026, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena on a huge scale granted individuals a 20% reservation to Delhi Police male constable-by-executive job vacancies. The decision changes Rule 9 of the Delhi Police (Appointment and Recruitment) Rules of 1980 to enable retired Agniveers to join the police after their four-year military service under the Agnipath scheme.
Ex-Agniveers will have a three-year concession in upper age (18-25 years) and exemption from the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) as they are rigorously trained in the armed forces. In the case of the first group of Agniveers, there is an age concession of five years to the normal one.
Having 42,451 approved posts within male constablism (executive), this quota presents thousands of young veterans a major chance in their veteran transition to civilian employment. The relocation can respond to the decades of requests concerning the opportunity to have improved post-service employment opportunities, as disciplined and trained personnel will become members of the force.
The officials of the L-G office said that the policy offers a seamless progression into policing service and detects the skills and fitness as well as the discipline gained in Agniveer service. It is in line with the national choices of rehabilitating Agniveers by reserving in central and state forces.
Defense veterans and aspirants have been pleased by the news, and they believe it is a move towards honoring their service, as well as giving more strength to the police ranks in Delhi. These changes will soon be captured during the recruitment processes as the ex-Agniveers will be eligible under the new guidelines. This move may become a precedent of comparable quotas in other law enforcement and governmental employment, as employment would become more secure for the short-service military youth in India.
