Assisted by the massive presence of a police force with a paramilitary force, the office of United News of India (UNI) at 9 Rafi Marg, New Delhi, was sealed by Delhi Police on March 20, 2026, on a new Delhi High Court decision. The court rejected the petition filed by UNI concerning cancellation of its long-time land allotment by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on the grounds that it had failed to abide by the stipulations of its construction project.
UNI termed the move an unparalleled atrocity and assault on media freedom, claiming there were no previous warnings. Employees, journalists, and female workers all alleged that they were forcefully pulled out, verbally abused, manhandled, and deprived of time to pick up their items or wait on the management. The premises had been occupied by the Government of India, and a notice was pasted on the gate preventing unauthorized entry.
This abrupt closure affected the functioning of one of the oldest news agencies in India, with numerous questions as to the freedom of the press and a sense of independence of the media in the face of the Carnival enforcement. UNI promised to take legal action, and the incident received press criticism and criticism by opposition personalities.
