First in India! Kochi, Kerala, Set to Become the Country's FIRST City with Modern Light Tram System—Goodbye Traffic Jams!

Kochi will be the first city in India to have a modern light tram transport. Being operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the project has a pilot line 6.2 km long, stretching between MG Road and Thevara, that provides cost-efficient, green, and efficient urban transit as a complement to the already existing network of metros and the mitigation of traffic.

.In the city of Kerala, Kochi is anticipating a big leap in transportation in the city. The city will be the first city in India to get modern light trams, which will be a boon in sustainable and efficient movement for the masses.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has improved the development of this innovative project, which will help to expand the chain of Kochi Metro. This is a light tram (also called MetroNeo or a trackless tram), which has sophisticated sensor technology to follow virtual tracks along roads, unlike traditional trams (such as the historic trams in Kolkata). It follows the example of trams such as that of Brisbane. It does not need any rail infrastructure laid down permanently and thus is quicker to roll out as well as cost-saving.

The proposed pilot route has a distance of 6.2 kilometers, which will be located between MG Road and Thevara, using the Shanmugham Road, High Court, and Jos Junction, a high-density commercial location full of traffic jams. Individual electric trams (3 coaches) will be in a position to carry 240 passengers, thus offering a clean and safe transportation alternative to congested buses and personal transportation.

KMRL has started extensive feasibility studies, which include technical means, occupancy projection, and financial feasibility. Negotiations are being conducted with such partners as HESS Green Mobility. After getting the permission of the Kerala government, the system would close connectivity gaps in the non-metro regions, facilitate the use of end-to-end solutions, minimize emissions, and lessen the congestion in the city center.

This project will be the beginning of increased green and intelligent urban transportation in India. Whereas other tram systems have died out over time, the light tram in Kochi reinvigorates the idea using modern technology—it could be seen as a template for other medium-sized cities. As the project advances, it may change the experience of commuting on a daily basis in Kochi and make Kerala a sustainable mobility leader. See what I tell you—this situation Kochi is in the vanguard!
