The Centre published a full list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Women’s Reservation Bill on April 19, 2026, after an attempt at an amendment of the Constitution failed in the Lok Sabha, which sought to provide 33% reservation to women.
The FAQs address the reason why the bill was introduced, why this bill should be connected with delimitation post-Census, and how this should be implemented. Its original version, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023), has a quota of a third place for women's representation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies but will only come into effect following delimitation in accordance with the first post-2026 Census.
The government explained that the new proposals aimed to allow the quota perhaps by 2029 elections without having to wait without end. The relocation will combat timing issues and ease concerns that the essence behind the fundamental reservation of women is maintained. The FAQs have elicited a new political debate as the government seeks a way forward on how to ensure that the women's representation in the legislature is increased.
