In a very tragic (the story was personally narrated by the writer as it happened) event in Dhirakula village, Odisha, Mayurbhanj district, a stray dog named Kali risked her own life to protect over 30 kindergarten children against a poisonous cobra.
As children romped outdoors at Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir at around 8:30 AM, the snake strolled past them. Kali, fearless, ran at the reptile and fought and killed it but was bitten severely in the process. She fell and died soon afterwards.
Moved by her courage, villagers arranged a flower-filled burial procession and wrapped her body in a white cloth and administered the funeral rituals, such as farewells performed to human beings. It has become a viral story, and netizens have adopted Kali as a real hero and a lesson to all that not every real hero is a human being.
