In an incredible feat, the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have been declared the most peaceful in a span of over 20 years, with no deaths occurring as a result of poll violence. The election authorities and state authorities confirmed that there were no reported major incidents like bombings or critical injuries of persons in the two-phase polling.
This is a drastic contrast to past elections, particularly 2021 and several panchayat elections that have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. Deploying central paramilitary forces widely as well as enforcing careful monitoring by the ECI helped contribute to the violence-free process, which also recorded record voter turnout.
This has been embraced by political analysts and the Supreme Court as a good move towards democracy in the state. Though brief scuffles were noted, the fact that the world has not yet lost a life is hailed as a historic milestone before today’s counting.
