On April 10, 2026, at least 10 people were killed in a heartbreaking accident when an overcrowded tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna River at Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. Victims were mostly pilgrims of Punjab, specifically in Pakistan, of the Ludhiana and Jagraon regions, who had been on a spiritual journey to the sacred town.
The privately-owned ship, with a carrying capacity of approximately 15, was carrying almost 30 passengers when it was said that strong winds swayed it and crashed into a floating pontoon bridge. The effect resulted in the overturning of the boat in some deeper waters. SDRF, NDRF, local divers, and police continued their searches, resulting in 22 injured and initial reports that 5 were missing as well.
District authorities have arrested the boat operator. The families of the victims have been rocked by the tragedy. Assurance of full support to the affected families has been given by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This accident once again brings the safety issue of boat overloading in the religious tourism of the area into the limelight.
