On Monday evening, March 23, 2026, at the Valero Energy refinery, Port Arthur, Texas, a massive explosion ignited towering columns of black smoke into the air and felt like an earthquake some miles away. The explosion, thought to have started in a diesel hydrotreater unit possibly because of a malfunction in an industrial heater, soon caused a fire that forced the city officials to impose a shelter-in-place order on residents on the west side of the coastal city, which is some 90 miles east of Houston.
There were no reported injuries, and everyone at the refinery was accounted for. Fire teams also worked during the night, and the blaze was put out by Tuesday morning. Air quality tests proved it was safe, and the shelter-in-place order was retired. Valero has shut down, temporarily, the 380,000-435,000 barrel per-day unit, which is one of the largest in the US, in order to carry out safety reviews.
This incidence has created alarm over any possible effects on the prices of gasoline and diesel amidst already volatile energy markets. There is an inquiry ongoing to find out the cause.
