Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is about to make history with the first of its Phase II expansion that will see the building of the first double-deck metro corridor in India. It is a new engineering miracle with two metro lines, both at different levels of the identical elevated viaduct, utilizing a single line of pillars in order to reduce land utilization and urban interference.

The highlight is a 4-km stretch of the Arcot Road between Alwarthirunagar and Alapakkam (which is part of Corridor 4: Lighthouse Poonamallee), in which Corridor 4 runs on the lower deck and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram-Sholinganallur) runs on the upper deck. Some stations, such as Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam, are constructed at two tiers to facilitate the flows across the lines. The building rises approximately 24 meters, or eight stories high, and enables trains on various corridors to share efficaciously.

According to CMRL recent reports, the final U-girder of the double-decker part of Corridor 4 has been cast and should be completed in the next few months. The corridor will be progressive, with initial services on priority stretches beginning in March 2026-June 2026, before full operation of the double-deck corridor in the future as segments of Corridor 5 grow.

This structure will overcome the high congestion and space limitation experienced in Chennai with superior capacity, less building area, and quick connection to the commuters in the western suburbs. It is brought to the fore by the authorities as an example of future urban rail projects in the overcrowded Indian cities.

Since the work on trials and finishing works continues, the anticipation of the start of the operations sets in and is predicted to change the daily traveling through Arcot Road and combine Phase I and II networks more effectively. Chennai, with a combined Phase II investment of over 63,000 crore, is the first of its kind in India with a double-deck metro, which provides a new standard of innovative and sustainable infrastructure in India in terms of public transport.
