Sibi George (20 May 1967) is an eminent Indian diplomat of the 1993 batch of the IFS (Indian Foreign Service). Now he serves as secretary (West) under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which is at the heart of India's engagement with Europe and other western countries.
George is from Pala, Kottayam District, Kerala, and had an illustrious career. He previously served as India’s ambassador to Japan (2022–2025), Kuwait, Switzerland, the Holy See (Vatican), and Liechtenstein. He has also served in significant positions in various Indian missions in Cairo, Doha, Islamabad, Washington, D.C., Tehran, and Riyadh.
On May 19th, 2026, when PM Narendra Modi visited Norway, George received a shout in the headlines for his succinct response to a Norwegian journalist who had asked, “Why should we trust India?” on issues of democracy, human rights, and press freedom. He underlined India's ancient history, constitutional principles, independent judiciary, extensive communication industry, and contributions to the world that are foundational to India's existence—such as the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and medicine supplies to more than 100 countries.
Online, his gentle yet firm response has been seen as an excellent Indian defense of its global position.
