A recent survey conducted by the PEW Research Center reveals that approximately 80% of Indians hold a favorable opinion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Furthermore, around 70% of Indians believe that their country's influence on the global stage has increased in recent times. The survey was conducted ahead of the G20 Summit and included insights from 30,861 adults in 24 countries, including 2,611 respondents from India.
Global Perception of India: Positive Outlook with Varied Responses
The PEW survey findings indicate that India enjoys a generally positive perception across the world. Among the surveyed countries, a median of 46% of respondents reported having favorable views of India, while 34% held unfavorable views. The survey also noted that 16% of participants did not express a specific opinion regarding India. Notably, the highest favorability was recorded in Israel, where 71% of respondents held a positive view of India.
Indian Public's View on PM Modi and Global Power
Within India, the survey reveals that a significant majority (80%) of respondents view Prime Minister Modi favorably, with 55% of them expressing a "very favorable" opinion. These numbers reflect the public's perception during Narendra Modi's second term as Prime Minister. The survey also highlighted that a mere one-fifth of respondents held an unfavorable opinion of PM Modi in 2023. As he eyes a potential third term in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the survey results indicate that his popularity remains robust.
India's Growing Global Influence: Perceptions and Comparisons
The PEW survey underscores the belief among Indians that their country's global influence is on the rise. Around 70% of respondents believe that India's influence has increased in recent times. This contrasts with a 2022 survey conducted across 19 countries, where only 28% of respondents shared a similar view. Additionally, Indian respondents expressed varying perspectives on the influence of other countries, with opinions on the US, Russia, and China showcasing a mix of perceptions.
