On April 17, 2026, Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz fully open to any commercial vessels until the end of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire. According to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, passage would take coordinated routes, which would be announced by the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran.

The strategic waterway where approximately 20 percent of all the oil in the world flows had become limited due to the recent tension in the region. This opening is immediately after a 10-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah was declared.

US President Donald Trump cheered the action by Truth Social, indicating that the strait is completely open and open to business, but made it clear that the American naval blockade of Iranian commercial vessels and ports will not be lifted until a comprehensive agreement, including over Iran’s nuclear program, is negotiated.

Certain tankers have been observed to go back even after the announcement, which casts doubt on the viability of freedom of navigation. The news led to a fall in oil prices, although international shipping companies are partial due to the existing risks and insurance concerns. Iran also has threatened to re-close the strait upon changing conditions.
