In the backdrop of the unstable South Asian environment that is shadowed by the current US-Israel-Iran war, Iran has openly urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to cease their mounting war. Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian foreign minister, called on both countries, on the occasion of Ramadan, to be restrained, respect sovereignty, and solve disputes through dialogue and good neighborliness. Tehran specifically said that it would mediate and convene discussions with an intention of tightening cooperation and ensuring further escalation.
It comes after Pakistan declared open war against the Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban following escalation of cross-border fighting and subsequent airstrikes on the cities of Afghanistan such as Kabul and border areas. According to the UN reports, the displacement of more than 100,000 people has followed fighting, and there is a danger of a spillover effect in the region.
The Foreign Ministry of Iran was greatly concerned about the loss of lives and instability and dialogue as the way out. Recent developments suggest a temporary end to the fire act of ceasefire (March 19, 2026), which was mediated by Afghanistan's regional actors, although there are unmatched tensions still. The agenda of the push is in line with China, Russia, and others, who call on the need to stabilize the neighbors amid the Iranian predicament. To analysts, this is an attempt to avert spillover and make Iran a positive regional player.
